SpaceX Falcon and Dragon in orbit!
SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral today, carrying the Dragon into orbit. The launch took place as scheduled as 07:44:38 UTC/3:44:38 a.m. EDT with the Dragon capsule heading for rendezvous and docking with the International Space Station. The spacecraft is functioning normally and as it deployed its solar panels, there was applause all around the SpaceX control rooms. The Dragon has also successfully opened the navigation bay, exposing its star trackers and navigation sensors to deep space. The launch was originally scheduled for May 19th, but was scrubbed following a pressure glitch in one of the engines which aborted the launch upon ignition. The ISS rendezvous is scheduled for May 25, at 12:06 GMT, and it will be a historic moment...
Read MoreUsing Google Drive with Git
Google announced their Google Drive service a last week, and it is in direct competition to others like DropBox and SkyDrive. Since it provides a Shared Folder option on both PCs and Macs, it becomes a good way to form a “remote” for your local git repositories. That way you can avoid the pain of setting up/buying a *nix server to host it. First you start with a local repository, say in ~/dev/projects/myproject . Once you have set up your Google Drive for Mac ( Link ), do the following in your Terminal ( in Mac ). Windows users can use similar commands : $ cd ~/”Google Drive” $ mkdir repos $ cd repos $ git init myproject.git –bare $ cd ~/dev/projects/myproject $ git remote add gdrive file://$HOME/Google%20Drive/repos/myproject.git $...
Read MoreGoodbye, Steve
Today, I woke up to the shocking news of Steve Job’s passing. What came as a shock was not only the news of his untimely death, but also how it affected me. I was almost moved to tears, to my surprise! I was born too late and in the “wrong” geographical location to have had a chance to appreciate his early achievements with the Mac. I guess my interest in his works only started from the iPhone era onwards. Only in the past few months have I come to know many of his stories and read his Stanford Commencement Speech from 2005. He was a great visionary, innovator and one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time. He influenced technology in way almost no one else did. From PC’s to Smartphones to personal music players, his innovation touches...

Read MoreA tribute to Apollo
Given that I started this blog on July 20th, it seems apt that I should start off with a post about the Apollo program. This is the 42nd anniversary of the moon-landing by Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. Even though I wasn’t born when it occured, it never ceases to inspire me. Below is a video I found on YouTube, compiled with scenes from “From the Earth to the Moon” and “Magnificient Desolation“, as a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo program, and the hundreds of thousands who worked to make it a...
Read MoreHello world!
Hello everyone! Finally, after years of procrastination, I have started a blog. Here, I will be jotting down everything that comes to mind on a wide range of topics that interest me, ranging from astronomy to programming to philosophy ( hopefully it won’t be insane ). Hopefully, it will be helpful to someone, somewhere at some point of time. As for the domain name, I couldn’t think of a “cool” one as much as I tried. I lost the “.com” one for my name sometime last year, thanks to my procrastination. It now hosts some Japanese spam site. So I settled for a “.net”. Anyway, like the bard said, “What’s in a name?” The site is still a work in progress. There may be a few drastic changes over the next f
